ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The Taiwanese alumni (Liu-Tai Qiaosheng) in Jakarta plays an active role in domestic society and transnational stage by flexibly redefining their identities. The unique Chinese language education background and overseas experiences in Taiwan have given Qiaosheng a special cultural attribute and an opportunity to become a transnational behaviour in connecting Indonesia and the Chinese-speaking world. They play with Indonesia, mainland China and Taiwan societies, which are not entirely amicable to each other, to not only gain advantages and earn profits but also create a habitable zone. By investigating the development of Chinese policy and Chinese language education policy in Indonesia at various times and the changes of Qiaojiao policy influenced by domestic and international powers in Taiwan to understand how these identities of Qiaosheng were constructed. Though they are weak in creating identities, they are always good at redefining themselves by taking advantages of cultural identities constructed by the others. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/188142 |
