Abstract: Malaysia's Mental Health Act 2001 provided a framework for the delivery of mental health services in Malaysia, and helped encourage the movement of mental healthcare from state mental institutions to community-based services. However, the provision of mental healthcare in Malaysia still faced challenges such as the integration of modern mental healthcare services with traditional belief systems, and deeply entrenched stigma surrounding mental health issues. This case study discusses those challenges and their wider implications for the treatment of patients with mental disorders in Malaysia.
