Abstract: This Master thesis studies the influence of technology spillovers on the R&D of climate-mitigation technologies for international shipping under an Emission Trading Scheme (ETS). This thesis theoretically describes a holistic framework of the shipping R&D process. The effects of technology spillovers on the R&D of low-carbon innovations are presented. A case study about the battery technology is more specifically detailed. An ETS scenario analysis is conducted about a joint ETS between the aviation and shipping sectors. A numerical model is then, created using the previous frameworks and compiled data. This model forecasts the battery energy density S-curve over time. The model proves the importance of an ETS and technology spillovers in accelerating the R&D of low-carbon technologies for the shipping sector.
