ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This paper was written based on the belief that creativity is an important factor for success in the new knowledge based economy. Since education plays an important role in determining one's thinking and creative abilities, the education system should facilitate the growth of creativity among pupils to enhance their competitiveness in the future. This paper attempts to examine the educational systems in Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan in the context of creativity. The assessments made use of the Amabile's (1996) Model of Creativity. It also reviews some of the problems faced by the education system in the four countries. This study found many similarities among the four East Asian countries, namely the heavy emphasis on grades and examinations, and intense competition among schools and students. The four countries were found to have built up strong domain-relevant skills for science and science and technology, but lacking in creativity-relevant skills. However, reforms to build a more creativity-friendly educational system are being carried out in all the four countries. After reviewing the direction, strategy and progress of these educational reforms, the paper concludes that the key factor for these countries to produce a pool of creative work force lies in injecting greater flexibility into their educational systems. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/182905 |
