Abstract: The radar cross section (RCS) of a rectangular cylinder with an axial slot is investigated. The two-dimensional Electric Field Integral Equations for both TM and TE excitation are solved using the method of moments. Resonance spikes are found in the RCS spectrum at frequencies which correspond to the resonant frequencies of the interior rectangular cavity. The dependence of the resonant behavior on the cylinder dimension, aperture size, and incident polarization can be interpreted in terms of the field distribution inside the cavity. The complex resonance frequencies can be calculated by finding the roots of the determinant of the corresponding impedance matrix. The behaviour for a three-dimensional box can be predicted from the results from the two-dimensional case by considering the resonance in the added dimension.
