Abstract: This study was embarked upon to examine how stutterers handle the demands of life in a modern society that places strong emphasis on eloquent speech. In the process, it also deals with the ways stutterers react towards their speech problem in their earlier years and how they handle the dynamics of conversation especially with the 'normals' in their later, adult life. The development of this group socially, emotionally, and intellectually and the extent to which stuttering has affected this development are also touched upon. Also included is their interaction with significant others, i.e. their family, friends and colleagues. The techniques used to conceal their stuttering, their aim to speak better and their eagerness to seek help show that stutterers want to present a desirable self-image in society. Gradually, they realise that they have to come to terms with the problem though always making a conscious effort to control it. At the back of their minds, they know that their speech problem has marginalised them.
