Abstract: Using a meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) approach, this study o?ers a general overview of the effects of emotional labor on burnout and provides supplementary considerations of moderators that may influence these relationships. Surface acting was found to be positively associated with burnout and its components of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. On the other hand, deep acting was negatively correlated with burnout and its components. Individual analysis of the three components presented a more comprehensive path model (Model 2) as compared to the summation of components (Model 1). Thus, moderator analyses of study characteristics – mean age of participants, proportion of females, and individualism scores based on country, were done using Model 2. As the moderators are continuous variables, a one-stage meta- analytic structural equation modeling (OSMASEM) approach was used to conduct moderator analyses. Results suggest that there is no moderator effect of the proportion of females on the relationship between emotional labor and burnout, whereas the mean age of participants was a partial moderator and individualism scores significantly moderated the relationship. Implications of the current study in the burnout literature and future directions are discussed.
