Title: | AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON EMPLOYED CHINESE FEMALE 'RETIREES' IN SINGAPORE : IMPLICATIONS FOR SOCIAL POLICIES | Authors: | KEK SEOW LING | Issue Date: | 1998 | Citation: | KEK SEOW LING (1998). AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON EMPLOYED CHINESE FEMALE 'RETIREES' IN SINGAPORE : IMPLICATIONS FOR SOCIAL POLICIES. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Demographic changes, in particular population aging, is a great concern among industralized countries, owing to its economic implications. This lead to the change in social and retirement policies. Older persons are to be regarded as a potential labour force. Thus, there is a desire to promote employment of older persons as a measure to combat the issue of population aging. This exploratory study had attempted to give insights to the employment issues and experiences of older Chinese female workers. The case study approach was utilized to gather rich and detailed information. This study had indicated that financial necessity is the main reason for the respondents to remain employed. The major factors determining employment of these respondents are nature of work, working hours as well as location of workplace. Another finding that deserves to be highlighted is the respondents' lack of preparation for retirement. This is because children are seen as financial support in old age. With this study, it is hoped to arouse the scholars' interest in this group of people. The implications of the findings on social and retirement policies are discussed. Recommendations are included to better enhance the 'position' of female older workers. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/174735 |
