Abstract: The Singapore Science Park, located next to the National University of Singapore (NUS), aims to promote research and development (R & D) activities and develop hightechnology industries and software enterprises. It is expected to play a major role in stimulating research and innovation in the manufacturing sector. The proximity of the Park to the NUS will foster interaction between industrial researchers and university academics resulting in a transfer and exchange of knowledge and ideas. The development of the Park will be in four phases and covers a total area of 125 hectares. Thirty hectares of land will be developed under Phase I. The park will accomodate private R & D enterprises and industries as well as government research agencies. To facilitate immediate start-up of operations, the Jurong Town Corporation (JTC) has built two blocks of standard buildings, also known as starter units. Fully prepared sites will also be leased to tenants for the construction of their own buildings. In the overall design of the Park, emphasis will be laid on well-designed buildings with wide open rolling grounds, aesthetically landscaped. The Park will not be fenced in so as to enhance the visual impact of wide open space. The Park Admission Committee has been set up to evaluate and select R & D enterprises and high-technology industries into the Park. The JTC will be handling the physical development of the Park and the Economic Development Board (EDB) will be responsible for the promotion of the Park.
