Title: | IMPACT OF FOREIGN WORKERS ON SHOPPING CENTRES : A CASE STUDY ON GOLDEN MILE COMPLEX | Authors: | FOK KUP TONG | Issue Date: | 1993 | Citation: | FOK KUP TONG (1993). IMPACT OF FOREIGN WORKERS ON SHOPPING CENTRES : A CASE STUDY ON GOLDEN MILE COMPLEX. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | As Singapore's economy progresses, the number of foreign workers also increases. This is because the cost of employing these workers is cheap compared to local workers. Thus, despite the heavy levy on these workers, the demand for them is still high. Being in a foreign country, these foreign workers need to develop a sense of belonging. As a result, they gather together at certain shopping centres, especially during the weekends. This dissertation aims to examine the impact of these foreign workers on these shopping centres. Golden Mile Complex is used as a case study where many Thai workers gather together. To determine the extent of the impact, the local shoppers', tenants' and the management's points of view are sought. Sales values of shop units are also examined. The overall conclusion is that the presence of the Thais workers at Golden Mile Complex has brought positive results like the increased sales for tenants and the revitalisation of the complex, giving it a lively environment. Although it also has negative effects like security, maintenance problems, the positive result greatly override them. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/173343 |
