Abstract: ........... " architectural design can be considered as the art of placing and controlling light sources in space. " 1 The potential of using light to enhance architectural spaces is enormous. Light exist everywhere, it gives rise to various architectural spaces by the illumination of objects and the enclosing spaces. The perception of spaces varies according to the way and the art of manipulating and controlling the light sources in spaces. Perception of a space changes when the brightness or illumination of some of the objects or elements changes which define it. For eg, a room lit by daylight from the windows is not the same as when it is artificiaily lit at night. A sky light may be used to tone down contrast, whereas the side lighting that accentuate them will give different perceptions of the same space. An opening in the center of the wall tends to create glare, whereas an opening at a comer will reduce it and wash the comer walls with a softer glow. For any one to move from a room to another, the change in the atmosphere could be felt and the perception to them is relative(in term of lighting). Through the reliance on the distribution of light from the refraction, a space as well as the process of visual adaptation, everything could be perceived by comparison. All these lighting experiences can only then be used to manipulate form and space, creating ambiance which will enhance the spatial experiences and hence creating a poetic architecture. Apart from all these, light can also be employed to help to dematerialize substances. As Corbusier aptly puts it: " Light appears as a part of a regular texture, the sun breaks thus becomes the instruments of paradoxical restoration of the surface. Its texture enables it both to capture and channel the light in flexible form and to distribute it with regularity. The absorbs and reflects the light continually modify its aspect according to the time of a day ... 2 In a building, colour and decoration are used to enrich a space. The sense of mass is felt through the means of continuous wall surfaces that defines the interior and the repetition of structural elements. Nevertheless, under the refraction of natural light from multiplicity of sources on surfaces, the mass and the presence of materials substances will be effectively denied. Instead of being seen as resting on solid foundation, these spaces seems suspended: it suggests weightlessness! In addition, light also helps to draw space into a continuity: it emphasizes distance, it intensifies the verticality and horizontality, and it may even help to increase an apparent length from a point to another which are the results of spatial illusion caused by shadow, high light and the plastic effect that are being created with light. In the practices and the beliefs of TADAO ANDO, he pushes the level of architecture one step further than just functional requirements, he employs light as a major component in his design; he brings not only light, but water and sky into it as well. As such, his building becomes the mediator for men to meet nature for the self-realization of oneself Architecture ultimately becomes a tool to bring men closer to nature for the desired calculated experiences. Through his architecture, one will not fail to experience the skillful and the magnificent play of architectural spaces and volume in light. The ambiance of light that are present has one. This thesis will, therefore, go beyond the functional aspects, and look into firstly, the correlation of space and light, secondly, the transformation of space and volume by light. Thus, enhancing the spatial experiences and ambiance. The architecture of this thesis is to act as an instrument for creating such experiences for any users. This aims to stimulate one creativity and imagination which will ultimately enrich a working place. (b.2) ISSUES o (1) To examine further how light could be used as an aid to architectural spaces, how light could be manipulated with respect to the perception of space and volumes as opposed to its purely utilitarian role to house the functional needs of our society. The aim of this exercise is to create a succession of spatial events in terms of their respective ambiance of light. o (2) To establish the architecturally spatial relationship between outdoor and indoor spaces by manipulating with the light intensities.
