IN SEARCH OF GEMEINSCHAFT : A COMMUNITY CENTRE PROJECT IN PENANG

Abstract

As the subject of sociology has always been in the interest of the author, the thesis aims to interpret the social issue of community in architecture. Base on the assumption that society is never homogeneous, this exercise strive to acknowledge the presence of Gemeinschaft (community with intimate relationship) in the context of a Post-modem society which has developed the character of Gesellschaft (society with impersonal relationship). The thesis also tries to interpret the new role of a post-modem community centre in this particular context and to resolve the problem arises through architectural programming.
