Abstract: The kinetic measurements of ozonizations of n-butraldehyde, and four structural isomers of butyl alcohol (n-butanl, 2-butanl, isobutanol and t-butanol) were carried out spectrophotometrically in the carbon tetrachloride solution, the second order rate constant for each compound was determined at 25 C. It was found that the rate constant for ozonization of aldehyde is much greater than that of ozonization of alcohols, and that the reactivity of various alcohols towards ozonization is in the following order:- 2-butano > n-butanol ~ isobutanol > t-butanol The present results combined with a value reported in literature seem to suggest that the reactivities of alcohols depend primarily on the structural types rather than the individuality. The order of structural reactivity may be expressed as: Secondary alcohol > primary alcohol > tertiary alcohol structural reactivity and that of the strength of the C-H bond on the alcohols, it was inferred that the reactivity of ozonization may depend on the dissociation energy of the C-H bond on a particular type of alcohol. Base on concept of 1,3-dipolar insertion, a tentative mechanism of ozonization of alcohol was discussed.
