Abstract: This study seeks to analyse the wordings of essay-type examination questions set for Economics and English Language in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the National University of Singapore. It is based on past studies of American and British examination questions. Through the use of two research instruments, the study alms to determine the abilities of students to interpret the writing tasks represented by examination questions. These instruments are an analysis of questions and surveys involving both instructors and students. The research methodology and findings of the study are presented in Chapters 3 and 4 respectively. The final chapter provides an agenda for further research.
