Title: | DESIGN FORUM : A CENTRE FOR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN | Authors: | SARIDA BINTE SANNIE | Issue Date: | 1991 | Citation: | SARIDA BINTE SANNIE (1991). DESIGN FORUM : A CENTRE FOR INDUSTRIAL DESIGN. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | INTRODUCTION: Today, Man is surrounded by objects, services and material goods due to the conspicuousness of consumption and affluence. His daily exchange is no longer with close proximity with his fellow human beings, but rather, with the acquisition and manipulation of goods and services; signifying the emergence of a complex consumer society where Man endowed with needs will be directed towards objects that will satisfy him . The impact of design has been phenomenal in the pursuit of our physical well-being and new design is constantly demanded to sublimate man's insatiable thirst for better and well-designed products. ISSUE: Text of pleasure: the text that contents, fills, grants euphoria, the text that comes from culture and does not break with it, is linked to a comfortable practice of reading. Text of bliss: the text that imposes a state of loss, the text that discomforts, unsettles the reader’s historical, cultural, psychological assumptions, the consistency of his tastes, values, memories, and brings a crisis to his relation with language. Issue #1: This thesis aims to investigate whether within the discipline of architecture there is similar to the quote above. a “Text of Pleasure “ and a “ Text of Bliss”. Issue #2: To investigate whether creativity in. design. can be enhanced through the process of the self being "displaced" or "disorientated". VEHICLE: The proposed Design Forum : a centre for industrial design, is not just an institute to display goods . but also a catalogue to instil change and innovation in the field of design. Ideally, the building and the objects displayed, propagate and will encourage us to question . think and contemplate about the objects before us . OBJECTIVES: i). To create an innovative and inspiring environment so as to maintain the momentum of the endless spiral of design, production and consumption. In the process, it will facilitate the extension and enrichment of Man's aesthetic life, knowledge and experiences . ii). to create a dialogue between the old and the new, investigating the " types " as defined by Ouartemere de Quincy, as the most irreducible aspects of the building . iii). to explore methods of creating an environment that will have an " estrangement effect " on the viewer ,violating his senses to the extent of his experiencing a certain discomfort . | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/169311 |
