Abstract: This exercise analyses the demographic profile of Peninsular Malaysia for the period 1947-85 based on available data sources. Chapter I presents an general overview of the population growth trends prior to 1947 and also during the period 1947-85. The ethnic composition of the population is also examined. Age and sex statistics of censuses are evaluated in Chapter II for digital preference and other errors. Different indices and measures such as the Myer's Index and the United Nations Joint Score have been applied to test the reliability and accuracy of the age and sex data in the census enumerations. General and differential mortality by ethnic group are analysed in Chapter III. Standard measures such as the crude death rates, infant mortality rates, age specific death rates and life expectancy at birth are utilised to study mortality and longevity trends. Cause-specific mortality is also appraised. In Chapter IV, general and differential fertility trends are studied through rates and ratios in terms of race and age. These measurements include the crude birth rates, age-specific fertility rates and age-specific marital fertility rates. A brief outline of family planning programs is also presented at the end of the chapter. International and inter-state migration are dealt in Chapter V together with population distributions by states and ethnic group. Chapter VI presents a brief review of the past and future population projections that had been prepared and the new population policy is also highlighted. The concluding chapter generally points out the likely future demographic situation in Peninsular Malaysia.
