Abstract: This study presents an examination of census practices in Singapore, in the years 1947, 1957, 1970, 1980 and 1990. In Chapter I, the various sources of demographic data are explained. The recommendations for conducting a population census by the United Nations are also discussed. Chapter II looks at the history of census taking in Singapore, together with a discussion of the general features of the censuses, and the enumeration method used. The importance and significance of age and sex statistics in demographic analyses are highlighted in Chapter Ill. This chapter also deals with some of the common techniques employed in evaluating such enumerated data. Past studies on the evaluation of age-sex statistics in Singapore censuses are then examined. Chapter IV focuses on the sampling practices in the 1970, 1980 and 1990 censuses. A section on post enumeration surveys is also included for discussion. Content analyses of the censuses are done in Chapter V, which deals with the questionnaires used, the enumeration methodology employed, as well as reports and timeliness. Chapter VI concludes with an examination of the use of databases in the 1990 census. The future of census taking in Singapore is also discussed.
