CARE OF THE FRAIL ELDERLY

Abstract

Singapore is faced with a graying population. One of the major issues that will emerge in the near future will be the families' ability to care for the frail elderly. In this study, twenty primary caregivers caring for frail elders at home were interviewed. Three main areas were explored in the study. Firstly, the reasons for caring for the elderly. Secondly, the problems encountered in the care of the elder and finally the services used by the elder and the caregiving families. By having a better understanding of these families, it is hoped that existing services could be expanded and new services introduced to strengthen the efforts of all caregiving families.
