Abstract: The main purpose of this exercise is to examine the demographic aspects of Brunei through different aspects such as mortality, fertility and migration. Chapter 1 describes the historical and geographical background of Brunei. A general overview of the growth in population is also looked into. Evaluation of the age and sex statistics is discussed in Chapter 2, a crucial chapter that evaluates the reliability of the demographic data prior to other analysis. Different measures and indices such as the Myer's Index, the Whipple Index and the United Nation Joint Score Index have been applied to gauge the accuracy of the sex and age data in various censuses. Mortality trends are analysed in Chapter 3. Standard measures such as the Crude Death Rate and Age Specific Death Rates are utilised. Infant mortality is also discussed. Chapter 4 studies the fertility differentials and trends. Possible factors affecting the fertility trends are also looked into. Chapter 5 discusses the movements of population into and within Brunei. The projected future population is dealt in Chapter 6. The concluding chapter points out certain deficiencies that have been encountered in this study and suggests some improvements that can be made for future research.
