Abstract: The renovation industry has been experiencing a boom in the last three years. However, its image has been gradually tainted by the notable increase in complaints of inferior workmanship and low levels of professionalism by these renovation contractors. Despite the construction industry's motto to excel, it is surprising that the renovation industry is allowed to persist in its current state of affairs. There is a lack of attention to quality checks and controls on the renovation work provided. Futile efforts have been made to improve the situation. The public is confused as to who is in charge of the renovation industry because neither HDB nor CIDB have assumed responsibility. The only hope lies in the hands of RADAC even though its job is hampered by the lack of funds and qualified professionals. More work needs to be done to educate the consumers on the services RADAC provides. Since no official body is willing to oversee the renovation industry, the consumer is alone in taking precautionary measures, even then, he is not assured of good workmanship. This dissertation aims at identifying the problems the consumer might encounter as well as the precautionary measures he must take to ensure that renovation proceeds smoothly. It will also highlight the measures that the Government should take in upgrading the industry.
