Abstract: On the basis of previous studies, this paper takes 313 pairs of Lianmian-words in Shuowenjiezi written by Xu Shen in Han Dynasty as the research object, investigates the phonetic rules and characteristics of the upper and lower words of Lianmian-words, and discusses related problems of ancient Chinese phonology. In Chapter 2, we define the phonetic standards of double initial consonant and reduplicated rhymes, classifies and counts the phonetic systems reflected by the Lianmian-words. It is believed that Lianmian-words can not be used as evidence for the existence of complex consonant in ancient Chinese. The distinction of Deng, Kai-he, and four tones in medieval Chiese existed in ancient Chinese. The third Deng and He kou in medieval Chinese were also used as middle in syllables in ancient Chiese. And they can be reconstructed as *-ĭu-. In Chapter 3, we continue discuss the phonetic skills of the upper and lower words of the Lianmian-words. The pronunciation methods, such as the clear or voice of initial consonants, Kai-he and four tones can be used as the distinctive features of the pronunciation of the two characters. Finally, this paper tries to explain some exceptional pronunciations of Lianmian-words from the perspective of Sandhi.
