Issue Date: | 1989 | Citation: | EE KONG HAN (1989). THE ROLE OF PRIVATE SECTOR IN CONSERVATION PROGRAMMES. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Unlike the past, Singapore has recently experienced such an upsurge in conservation movement that almost engulfs the normal trend of comprehensive redevelopment. Much emphasis has been placed nowadays on the creation of a more humane environment in which people live, work and recreate through conservation of old buildings within environmental areas. As such, the air of ambivalence over the destiny of quaint buildings gradually dissipates. In the meantime, it is also noticed that a more consultative style of planning begins to percolate all strata of the society vis-a-vis what is crudely known as 'government-know-best' style of planning. Private initiatives and commitment are greatly accentuated by the new guards of the People's Action Party Government in all aspects of planning, be it economic, physical or social. In response to such a planning style, the Urban Redevelopment Authority which has so often been regarded as the central conservation authority has attempted to draw private action into its conservation programmes. In so doing, incentives and concessions are granted to lure more private participation. This study seeks to evaluate the public/private partnership scheme and as such the role of private sector in conservation programmes | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/163966 |
