In July 2019, Shanghai implemented a waste sorting policy for solid waste. This case study looks at how the waste sorting policy fits into broader national goals of an "ecological civilization". The case study looks at the way the waste sorting policy was implemented and its impact on the residents of the city. The case study also looks at the various ways the city government generated compliance, through various surveillance measures.
