TOURISM IN SINGAPORE : SUPPLY-SIDE CONSIDERATIONS

Abstract

The supply in tourism is a rather new area in the economic literature. Very little research has been done on this topic. Therefore, the aim of this Academic Exercise is to research some of the supply components in Singapore and also to examine the present status of these components. An outline of the scope and objectives of the study is presented in the introductory chapter. An introduction to the tourist industry in Singapore will also be presented. In chapter II, the main components of tourism supply in Singapore like hotels and shopping are discussed. Chapter III tourist products travel agents, attractions. We identifies the components of other like beaches, night entertainment, gourmet's paradise, cultural and other also mention some of the future plans for the development of these attractions. In the fourth chapter, the results of the questionnaire survey, that was carried out to study the present status of major tourist products and services in Singapore are presented. It is found that hotels, shopping centres, and transportation are "excellent" while other attractions like beaches, night entertainment, sports/ games, and others are "poor". In addition, there is an excess supply of hotels and shopping centres while beaches, night life, sports/games, and cultural attractions are undersupplied. Chapter V presents the summary and conclusion.
