THE TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN SINGAPORE (IMPACT OF THE MRT)

Abstract

The transport system is part and parcel of our daily lives, whether we are students, workers, housewives or leisure-goers. It has an impact on everyone. We use it to make our travelling easier and faster. But we sometimes take the system for granted and curse it when at times it becomes a slight inconvenience during peak hours or during festive seasons. Bus commuters are often heard complaining about the delays, the heat, the bumps and the overcrowding during peak hours; motorists complaining about the traffic congestion, road works and widening; and pedestrians complaining about the noise and the dust. These are the frequent comments one hears or would even make. And many of these comments were made out of ignorance. Many do not see how important the transport system is to us. It is true that there are inconveniences and frustrations, but the fact is that the transport system is what keeps people and the economy moving. The transport system is indispensable. Our society depends on it. Our economy depends on it. It is the backbone to social cohesiveness and economic prosperity. It is essential to have an efficient transport system that serves the country, and this is what Singapore is striving towards.
