Title: | LAND USE AND DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL OF HOLLAND VILLAGE | Authors: | TAN PUAY HOONG IVY | Issue Date: | 1988 | Citation: | TAN PUAY HOONG IVY (1988). LAND USE AND DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL OF HOLLAND VILLAGE. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | During the past decade, real property development in Singapore has taken a new facet. While, traditionally, commercial activities were concentrated in the Central Area, recent trends have seen the government actively encouraging the growth of suburban centres. This policy is mainly due to relieve the over - crowdedness in the city centre and to cater to the needs of the widely distributed population. Holland Village has emerged as the hub of commercial activities in the Holland District in the sixties. Although the legacy of Holland Village dates back to the days of the colonial period where it was a favourite shopping region of the British community, it was not until the seventies, after the construction of Holland Road Shopping Centre, that it has become one of the most popular suburban shopping areas. In fact, the scale and quantum of development, then, was far from what it is today. It is in view of this rapid pace of growth that Holland Village has been singled out for study and the dissertation examines the pattern of commercial and residential development in the study area and assesses the potential for future retail development. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/163087 |
