Abstract: The aim of this work is to explore the notion of topic in casual conversation. Chapter One discusses the significance of topic structure study in discourse and reviews the past literature. The methodology is described in Chapter Two. In the next chapter, the findings of the analysis which include the structural rules as well as lexical cohesion, are discussed. The final chapter contains a comparison of these rules of topic change from casual conversation with those from the classroom situation together with an evaluation of the study.
