Abstract: This project represents an attempt to study the treatability of the Pandan Fiver water by alum coagulation, and filtration through shallow beds of unstratified fine sand. The optimum alum dosage, and effects of pH and hardness on coagulation were evaluated. The feasibility of the filtration process was studied and the effects of hydraulic loading rate, sand size, backwash volumes and periodic air-pulsing of filter bed on filter performance assessed. The results were tabulated, graphically presented and interpreted. Finally, conclusions were drawn and recommendations made.
