Abstract: With a depressed property market and a glut of retail space in the private sector at present, developers are finding it somewhat difficult to sustain competition. To them, the business of creating successful shopping centres is no longer a straightforward exercise. In order to sustain the attractiveness and viability of shopping centres, there is now a need to formulate strategies and to identify possi ble areas of improvement. Future developments should place greater emphasis on proper selection of anchor occupiers, layout, trade mix and promotion in order to ensure both a high level of initial commitment and continued occupancy.
