Abstract:

PATTERNED LUBRICANT FILM OF ZDOL, THE PERFLUOROPOLYETHER (PFPE) WITH TWO OH FUNCTIONAL END GROUP, WHICH GIVES THE DESIRED BONDING RATIO, BONDING STRENGTH AND UNIFORM COVERAGE ON MAGNETIC HARD DISK, HAS BEEN EMPLOYED TO MAXIMIZE LUBRICANT FILM PERFORMANCE. IN THIS THESIS, INVESTIGATION WAS DONE ON BOTH MOBILE AND BONDED COMPONENTS IN THE PATTERN BONDED LUBRICANT FILM USING THE OPTICAL SURFACE ANALYZER (OSA) AND X A??RAY PHOTOEMISSION SPECTROSCOPY (XPS). THE PHASE SHIFT SIGNAL AND REFLECTIVITY INTENSITY OF POLARIZED LIGHT SHOW DIFFERENT RESPONSES FOR BONDED (PATTERN-BONDED) AND MOBILE LUBRICANTS. THE BUFFING TEST CARRIED OUT ON PATTERN BONDED LUBRICANT SHOW THAT THE PATTERNED LUBRICANT IS MECHANICALLY STABLE AND CHEMICALLY BONDED WITH THE UNDERNEATH CARBON SURFACE. FINALLY, EFFECT OF LUBE PATTERNING ON DYNAMIC INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE SLIDER AND THE LUBRICANT IS STUDIED BY TWO TYPES OF TRIBOLOGICAL TESTS. THESE RESULTS DEMONSTRATE THE PATTERN BONDING CONTROLS THE LUBRICANT TRANSFER FR
