Abstract: 

IN THIS PROJECT, A NOVEL RECEIVER FOR NEXT GENERATION OPTICAL RECORDING SYSTEMS SUCH AS BLU-RAY DISC IS PROPOSED, DEVELOPED AND REALIZED. THE PROPOSED RECEIVER IMPROVES ON THE ARCHITECTURE OF CONVENTIONAL RECEIVERS BY MAINTAINING SEPARATE TIMING RECOVERY AND ADAPTIVE COMPENSATION LOOPS. USING SOFTWARE SIMULATIONS, THE PERFORMANCE OF THE PROPOSED RECEIVER IS VERIFIED AND AN EQUIVALENT DIGITAL SYSTEM IS DEVELOPED.

DEMONSTRATING THE EASE AND COST EFFECTIVENESS OF IMPLEMENTING THE PROPOSED RECEIVER AS A DIGITAL SYSTEM, THE PROPOSED RECEIVER IS REALIZED ON A FPGA AND SHOWN TO BE OF HIGH PERFORMANCE, ROBUST AND CAPABLE OF HIGH DATA-RATES COMMENSURATE WITH NEXT GENERATION OPTICAL RECORDING SYSTEMS.
