Title: | PUBLIC HOUSING IN ASEAN | Authors: | MOK KIN WAH | Issue Date: | 1984 | Citation: | MOK KIN WAH (1984). PUBLIC HOUSING IN ASEAN. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | ASEAN, one of the taster growing region in the world today, is not without its housing problems. The housing condition is characterised by rapid papulation growth, especially in the already over-crowded capital cities; sprouting of illegal squatter settlements and overcrowding in the cities slums. With the exception ot Singapore, the housing programmes implemented by the respective public housing agencies in the past have proved to be ineffective . The objective of this study is to examine the existing public housing polices and programmes adopted by the ASEAN countries. The findings reveal that the current policy, unlike past strategies which centred on slum and squatterclearance and resettlement to outlying areas, is towards an increased tolerance of such settlements and more positive programmes (such as sites services and upgrading). A comprehensive approach to the housing problem would require better integration of housing with other development policies. Due to the lack of the necessary expertise and experience, the situation calls for of more cooperation and exchange of knowledge within this region. Thus, the role of international organisations and lessons that the Singapore experience can offer are examined. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/159926 |
