Abstract: Given the increasing lifespan of persons with developmental disabilities, the ageing of their parent-carers, and the greater number of children being diagnosed with developmental issues, this study sought to understand the anticipated needs and resources of adult siblings of persons with developmental disabilities as they are often called upon to take on the caregiving role when their parents pass on. Semi-structured and face-to-face in-depth interviews were used to shed light on the anxieties that seven adult siblings have about the future, the strengths and resources they possess which will help them with their future caregiving role, their anticipated life changes when they transition to caregivers in the future, and how they believe social workers can best support and meet the needs of adult siblings of persons with developmental disabilities. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. The biopsychosocial-spiritual model was found to be a useful integrative framework to provide a holistic understanding of adult siblings’ perspectives and experiences. A cause for concern is the perceived gaps in social services and policies in addressing the needs of adult siblings and supporting their roles as future caregivers to their brother or sister with developmental disabilities. Implications for social work practice and social policies are thus discussed.
