Abstract: The objective of this exercise is to probe into the communication problems existing between the Japanese and Singaporeans. This exercise employed one of the existing frameworks of communicative competence in analysing and interpreting the problems found. The methodology employed in the data collection is known as Introspective Method. The whole process of data collection consists of video filming of conversations between Japanese and Singaporeans, questionnaires, transcriptions and follow-up interviews. The results of my data show that communicative competence related problems do exist in the Singaporean subjects when they are communicating in Japanese language. These problems were described and discussed in the exercise.
