Abstract: The second-order rate constants for mercury(II)-induced aquation of some chloro(alkylamine)bis(dimethylglyoximato)cobalt(III) and chloropentamminerhodium(III) complexes have been measured in aqueous solution. HgC1+ is the leaving group in both cases during the unimolecular aquation with the formation of the aquo-product. By studying the rate constants obtained from induced aquation of some chloro(alkylamine)bis(dimethylglyoximato) cobalt(III) complexes the competitive influence of the steric and inductive effects of alkyl substituents are discussed. In the case of rhodium complexes undergoing induced aquation, the effect of changing the solvent on the reaction rate is discussed.
