Abstract: The acute toxicity of lead to Mytilus viridis was studied. The median tolerance limit (Tlm) at 168 hours was found to be 4.46 ppm. The uptake of lead in the mussel's whole soft parts was followed. Results show that the accumulation is linear with time throughout the experimental period. Histopathological changes and the identification of storage sites of lead were also studied in an attempt to determine whether the accumulated lead caused cellular damage to the tissues and organs. Gills, foot epithelium and mantle were the main storage sites. Histopathological conditions were observed in the gills, gut, digestive gland and kidney.
