Abstract: Our research focuses on developing an enhanced Student Model for use in the domain of teaching Thai writing. To achieve this, we implement Thairator, an ITS developed with the rule-based language JESS, which models the student using Constraint Based Modeling (CBM) with several novel enhancements. One of the main weaknesses of CBM is the inability to describe what the student actually knows. Using our enhancements, we show the ability of the system both to differentiate accidental conformance to constraints and more accurately model the studenta??s strengths and weaknesses. To help with the codification of domain knowledge, a high-level ontology of language transcription is developed and is used to design the detailed ontology of Thai transcription. The constraints needed to model the domain are extracted from this detailed ontology. The use of such ontologies to aid design has proven to be very helpful.
