Abstract: The interactions of viologens with conducting polymers, metal salt solutions and glucose oxidase were investigated. The conversion of polyaniline from the insulating state to the doped and conductive state was accomplished through the photo-induced reaction with viologen in the solid state. Nanoscaled metal coatings and dispersions were successfully achieved via the photo-induced reactions of viologen with noble metal salt solutions. These reactions were also employed to fabricate conducting patterns on viologen-grafted substrates through a mask. A co-immobilization method was developed for the functionalization of polypyrrole film with viologen and glucose oxidase for glucose sensing, wherein the viologen serves as a mediator for electron transfer from the enzyme to the modified polypyrrole electrode.
