The Achilles tendon reflex time (ATRT) of 14 patients with chronic uremia was measured. There was significant prolongation of the mean ATRT as compared with that in normal subjects. No correlation was obtained between the ATRT and the blood urea or serum levels of potassium, sodium, chloride, calcium, phosphate, hemoglobin, and blood pressure. The prolonged ATRT in chronic uremia is probably a manifestation of neuropathy. The results obtained also indicate that the ATRT as a measure of thyroid status would be invalid in the presence of chronic uremia.
