An explication of the ideological elements in the 1981 "May Day Message" delivered by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (Straits Times, Singapore, 1 May 1981). The text, while implying the duty of democracies to select a form of government, claims that Singapore's single-party free enterprise system is rationally preferable to a communist government. The legitimating strategies used in the address are demonstrated, eg, the reconstruction of history & the plea issued for increased "team achievements" & "team spirit" among Singaporean workers. D. Dunseath.
