Abstract: A descriptive study of 10 transvestites in Singapore, known locally as pondan, who support themselves through prostitution. Intensive interviews examined Rs' subculture, perceptions about family & society, & attitudes toward their behavior & profession. It is suggested that their subcultural environment in part compensates for deficiencies in family life. Pondans are considered homosexual primarily because they are patronized by homosexuals. Unlike homosexuals in the US who have founded political organizations & monitored movements to fight for social & political rights, the pondans in Singapore are mainly concerned about their relations with clients & with family members. Their practice of prostitution is attributed to social discrimination, compounded by a traditional occupational structure & sexual DofL. Modified AA.
