Examines letters written by 300 Tamil migrant workers in Malaya & Singapore in 1962 to explore their social disorganization in homeland India & social reorganization in Malaya, focusing on the social disorganization theory proposed by W. Thomas & Florian Znaniecki (1984). The letters also provide information on living conditions aboard the ships, preparation for travel, & life in India, including the treatment by Indian customs officials. The importance of the village migrant workers' ethnic identity in multiracial Malaya is also discussed. C. Haywood.
