Abstract: The role of literature in the spread of English as an international language & in the spread of regional varieties of English is examined. The development of new literatures in nativized varieties of English illlustrates the multilingual, multicultural, & multiliterary forces at work in modern society. Factors motivating the "New English" writing include the binding of diverse peoples & cultures, exploration of the forces affecting society, & examination of the past. The appropriateness of English in the multicultural/multilingual context is emphasized. Two recent models for the spread of English proposed by Braj B. Kachru & Randolph Quirk are briefly outlined & compared as they relate to the New English literature. B. Annesser Murray.
