Factors motivating the "New English" writing include the binding of diverse peoples & cultures, exploration of the forces affecting society, & examination of the past. The appropriateness of English in the multicultural/multilingual context is emphasized. Two recent models for the spread of English proposed by Braj B. Kachru & Randolph Quirk are briefly outlined & compared as they relate to the New English literature. B.
