ScholarBank@NUS Repository. https://doi.org/10.1007/3-540-28043-X_81 | Abstract: | The clinical and pathological aspects of cystic diseases of the breast were described as far back as 1845 by Reclus [1]. Cooper [2], in his monograph Illustrations of diseases of the breast, published in 1929, described in detail cystic disease and many other aspects of benign diseases of the breast. Although the foundations for understanding benign breast diseases were laid early, uncoordinated and sporadic work over several decades has created a confusing array of terminology, including fibrocystic disease, chronic cystic mastitis, cystic mastopathy, hyperplastic cystic disease, and Shimmelbusch's disease. The absence of cancer has often been equated with breast health. The result is that benign breast disorders, which contribute the majority of outpatient visits, receive little emphasis and understanding. Cysts are one of the commonest findings in women presenting to a breast clinic. The precise epidemiology of gross cysts is not known. Most breast cysts are the result of aberration of normal development and involution [3]. There are other less common varieties of breast cysts (Table 81.1).
