Abstract: This paper analyzed the bandwidth limit of a class of ultrathin metamaterial screens for reducing reflectivity. The screens consist of arrays of conducting strips or square patches on top of a planar lossy dielectric or magnetic substrate backed by a conducting ground plane. An accurate analytical model has been derived to calculate the reflection coefficients of the screens, which take into account accurately the high order modes between the array and the ground plane. Based on the analytical model, the maximum bandwidth of the screens was explained. The factors determining the maximum bandwidth of the screens were revealed, which can serve as guidelines for the design of the ultrathin metamaterial screens. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.
