dc.description.abstractGovernments often spend public funds on projects which are supposed to be in the public interest. Since there are several projects making claim to public funds at each point in time vis-à-vis limited funds, and each project could provide several options, government bodies need to satisfy themselves that whatever project (and option) chosen is the one that maximises net benefits to society. One of the most widely accepted methods for appraising public projects is the cost-benefit analysis (CBA). Notwithstanding the controversy over the philosophical and economic bases of CBA, CBA has been, and can be effectively used to appraise public projects provided analysts use it with care. © 2012 Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved..
