Abstract: An architecture for ATM networks to provide more reliable transmission to support connectionless and multicast services for short message transmission is introduced in this paper. This architecture suggests to use a logical ring concept to form a virtual legacy shared-medium networks in the ATM layer. With the use of ATM cell block and a Reed-Solomon code based cell-coding scheme in transmission, the proposed architecture can support multipath-transmission by maximizing the use of left bandwidth so that the packet loss probability can be reduced in a range from several to tens magnitudes compared to existing schemes.
