This paper describes a novel approach for the design of air intakes by considering both aerodynamics (AE) and electromagnetics (EM) performances. The design process combines the key techniques of shape parameterization using Hicks-Henne functions, design of experiments (DOE), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, EM simulation, and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) using the gappy POD. Two redesigned intakes are proposed. One is to improve only AE performance, while the other is aimed at improving both AE and EM performances. Comparisons of the redesigned intakes indicate that the result of the multidisciplinary design is a compromise solution, due to the conflicting requirements from the viewpoints of AE and EM. © 2008 IEEE.
