Sociologists are inclined to critical self-examination of their discipline and the most recent discussion of public sociology initiated by Michael Burawoy is an integral part of that positive trend. This article addresses mainly sociologists in Asia and elaborates on my earlier response to Burawoy's ideas by contrasting the key aspects of the public sociology debate in a historical perspective. © 2011 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden.
