Abstract: The phase transformation of the L1 0 FePt thin films with ultrathin Ag top layers prepared by magnetron sputtering was analyzed using crystallographic ordering. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were used for investigating the surface morphology and texture of the films. The L1 0 ordered FePt phase transformation was promoted by the existence of the diffused Ag from the top of the film. The phase transformation of the L1 0 FePt was limited to occur at the interface of the Ag and FePt, as observed from HRTEM.
